Social media for local businesses: becoming the place everyone talks about

For a café, a gym or a motorcycle workshop, social media works differently than it does for big brands. Six practical tips to help local businesses stand out.

For a café, a gym, a dance school or a motorcycle workshop, social media works differently than it does for a national brand. The goal isn't to reach millions of people across the country; it's to be the first name that comes to mind for people within a few kilometres of you. Here's what we've learned working with local businesses across many industries in Bursa, in six tips.

1. Show your face

People connect with people more than with brands. Short videos where the owner, the mechanic, the trainer or the barista talks comfortably to camera build more trust than the slickest product photo. You don't have to be perfect; being genuine is enough.

2. Make your location part of the content

Bring your neighbourhood, your street and familiar corners of the city into your content. Tag your location in posts and mention the city and area in captions. It makes it easier for people nearby to find you, and it creates a feeling of "one of us".

3. Bring customers into the story

A happy customer's reaction, the crowd at an event, a student's first lesson… Content with real people gets watched more and feels more believable. Just one rule: never film or post anyone without their permission.

4. Use special days and events

Anniversaries, Mother's Day, a Halloween night, a season opening or a small workshop… Special days give you a ready-made topic and give people a reason to come by. Announce the event in advance, share during the day, and wrap it up with a short recap video.

5. Be consistent, not perfect

Good posts on a regular rhythm work better than one flawless post a month. Make a monthly content calendar and plan your shoots in batches, so your account doesn't go quiet even on busy days.

6. Keep your profile complete

When someone lands on your profile, they should find what they need in seconds: what you do, where you are and how to reach you. Put your address and opening hours in the bio, add a one-tap WhatsApp or call button and keep your story highlights up to date. Don't forget your Google business profile either; in local search, it's often the first thing people see.

In short

  • Put yourself and your team on camera.
  • Bring your neighbourhood and city into the content.
  • Include real customers, with their permission.
  • Turn special days into content and invitations.
  • Post consistently and keep your profile up to date.
